Chapter Sixteen

This puzzle was a real mindbender. I sat in a blue armchair in my room under the halo from my night lamp, playing over the last few days in my mind.

Led by someone called Draylac, a group of rogues had come to Silverton. A clear violation of territory etiquette. Then, one of the werewolves had visited Gino. Why?

Gino couldn’t have known the guy was a werewolf. He couldn’t ‘sniff’ them out like Ali could, or recognize them on sight like Ivy. However, if Gino had known, would he have talked to him?

What about the rogue? Did he know who Gino was? Not to sound immodest, but we Duprees were royalty, or at least infamous, among kin.

Most likely, the furball had no idea. My sire had only been back in Oldworld for a few weeks.

Still, I’d sure like to know what they talked about. It would give me an idea as to why the rogues were in Silverton.

I listened out into the corridor to ensure no one was eavesdropping, then activated my phone. A tone sounded, and I leaned back in my leather chair.

“Miss me already?” Ivy asked in a cheerful tone.

“Always. We need to talk.” I swallowed. Normally she was the one taking the lead on investigations, and I was the quiet sidekick. “It's important.”

“Shoot.”

I splayed against the chair's upholstery and stretched my legs.

“Just now, Gino met with a rogue werewolf. I recognized the guy’s voice. He and Gino made some sort of arrangement. First the group of vampires, and now the rogues are trying to get into his good graces. Something’s cooking in Silverton.”

“What could the rogues have in common with the vampires? The vampires were part of The Circle, right? Unless you think the rogues are the other faction. You know, the one your girl talked about. Because that would suck, but totally explain why they're working together as a pack, or rather as an alliance.”

Important conversation, sure, but I took a moment to let my lungs widen. Keely was my girl. Mine.

I missed her. Not just my cock, but every inch of my skin yearned for her touch.

One more big sigh.

Moment over.

“Our pack—” I took a sharp breath. “Parker's pack might be at greater risk than we thought. Keely and her pregnant girls even more so.”

“Can you find out what your sire and the rogue talked about?”

“I’ll try to get into Gino’s office later to have a snoop, but I can't guarantee it.”

Ivy shouldn't have mentioned Keely, because her face in my mind made it tough to concentrate.

“Do you need any protective guards? You know, just in case?”

I rubbed my neck. “Have you made any?”

She gave a wry laugh. “Tons. Parker’s busy with business, and you with, you know, your own stuff, which leaves me plenty of time to tinker.”

“You could always go to the office and, oh I don’t know, do that thing where you shuffle folders from one side of the desk to the other, hoping I assume you’re working.”

“I’m scratching myself with both middle fingers, just so you know.
